Conservatory Window Treatments

When it comes to regulating the temperature of your conservatory the space needs to be addressed completely separate from the rest of your home. Not only will properly positioned window treatments control to much heat gain or loss they will also help with privacy control.

Here are some examples of what we use and recommend at Conservatory Craftsmen;

PLEATED SHADES:

Conservatory Interior Pleated Blinds

Pleated shades are the most versatile way to treat the windows of the Conservatory roof and walls.  There are numerous fabric choices giving the customer customization options with color and texture. The pleated shades also have a ‘top-down/bottom-up’ option for side walls and when fully pulled the stack is considerably tight making this option the least obvious.

Conservatory Shades Interior Pleated

It is also quite smiple and cost effective to incorporate motorization to pleated shades making operation easy as a click of a button!

WOVEN WOODS (Pinoleum):

Europe’s very popular option for window and roof blinds. Pinoleum, as the names implies, is made of natural materials which are sewn together in a weave, to create a fabric. This offers partial sun blocking as the light filters through between the tiny slats of the pinoleum.

Conservatory Pinoleum ConservatoriesDefinitely an organic choice for the conservatory with a desire to show a weaved fabric and material. The closed stack of the pinoleum fabric is bulky and covers much of the eave. This may or may not be the goal of the designer and homeowner in each application.

One advantage of the pinoleum blind is that is can be mounted under the rafter, so it can cover multiple rafters (and glass openings) with one blind. Fewer blinds, less cost of automation.

ROLLER SHADES:

Conservatory Roller Shades

The roller blind is the simplest of the options. Improved mechanical design means a cleaner, easier to operate roller, that is always dependable. Mounted on the eave, the cord goes to the ridge and you wrap the blind tight on a hasp. Roller blinds are  also available with motors.

Conservatory Roller Shades

Many colors are available. Give our designers an idea of the color you are looking for and they will help you with selection. All have UV reflective materials on the back side. We recommend using roller blinds for shorter runs of glass (under 6’). This will avoid the blind from ‘bellying’ as it gets older. To some,  the general appearance of the low hanging blind is appealing. This form of blind stacks very tightly and is easier to conceal on the eave. Different fabrics which are now available give a more modern or ‘organic’ look to the blind.

Conservatory window treatments are a good thing to keep in mind while planning your project. Not only with your selection be more customized to your room but you will have everything done at the time of installation!

Morristown, New Jersey Conservatory Construction

Here we are a few years back in beautiful Morristown in upstate New Jersey. This was a very special project given the enormity of the room. In this post we will showcase the construction process and follow-up with the interior!

Conservatory Glazing

Glazing

It doesn’t matter if your project is 500 sq.ft. or close to 2,000, as this showcased project, Conservatory Craftsmen will spend countless hours in the design and detail phase. We work closely with local building codes and bring on engineers when required. The Morristown project, given the scale, took some time to calculate the loads so that the steel ‘skeleton’ is designed to handle the weight. One piece of roof glass could be over 200 pounds!

The front end time spent obsessing over details and logistics keeps time on site to a minimum and ensures an efficient installation.

Stay tuned for the finished product and some amazing interior details of this gorgeous Conservatory!

Chicago, IL Conservatory Project

In the Fall of 2010 our customers began to plan a major renovation to their home that included a new kitchen, living space, landscaping and a Conservatory.  Mr. & Mrs. N knew that incorporating a Conservatory into the renovation was pivotal to better enjoy their outdoor living space. They visualized a wonderful gathering space that seamlessly blended the kitchen to the patio area. Mr. & Mrs. N had done extensive market research and choose to hire a local architect to begin putting ideas to paper and to ensure fair quotes from all trades.

Here is a shot I took from my first site visit last year.

Niro Conservatory Before

Let’s begin planning our dream!

Niro Architect Conservatory Concept

The architect, Robert Flubacker, did a wonderful job helping the clients visualize the outcome.

Conservatory Niro Concept 005

The Conservatory design was proving to be a bit complicated due to the inside ‘L’ location

Conservatory NiroConcept1

One requirement from the homeowner is to incorporate extra tall sidewalls because the existing patio door has a transom located over it. Thus making the eave height 11′ !

The materials specified are a natural Mahogany with a painted exterior to match the existing trim on the home

Looking up at the night sky from this view is going to be awesome!

In partnership with contractor Mark Zurek, owner of Delta Renovations out of Barrington, IL the demo has begun and the site is being prepped for the Conservatory.

Time for Conservatory Craftsmen to install!

Our total ‘on-site’ time was 4 days. Because of extensive planning and flawless communication between all parties the install went off without a hitch. We even had time to eat home-made pizzas out of the homeowners brick pizza oven on the patio!

The Conservatory is more that the clients ever imagined!

Open letter to Michelle Obama

Mrs. Michelle Obama

1600 Pennsylvania Ave

Washington DC

It’s time to bring your garden inside!

We were happy to learn of the bold move you made to restore a garden on the White House lawn  and certainly hope you and the First Family have enjoyed the fruits of your labor.

But frankly, it’s time for the next step in showing the country your commitment to fresh and nutritious foods – restoring the White House conservatory. With a conservatory added to the White House you would be able to garden year round while enjoying the peace and tranquility and indoor garden brings. Imagine being able to entertain guests amidst the bright foliage, fresh scents and soothing ambiance of such a room.

Plus, you’d be restoring a bit of the long lost history to the White House,

In the twentieth century, there were once two conservatories on the White House.  One was removed to add the West Wing, the other was removed for no apparent reason that we can find.  However, in their day, these structures were used to grow all the produce and flowers that graced the White House — all year long.

Mrs. McKinley loved to celebrate the holidays in the White House Conservatory, as evidenced by stereoscope photos she used for her Christmas Cards.  Abraham Lincoln grew lemons in the White House Conservatory and gave them as gifts, in fact, this was one of his last acts the day he met his unfortunate end at the Ford Theater.

white house

All that to say that a conservatory on the White House has its place in history when our Nation had an abiding appreciation for the very objectives you are achieving through your garden — the growth of fresh nutritious foods.

Plus, today’s conservatories easily meet the green building standards President Obama is so committed to.  In many of the structures we build, we use solar glass that collects Solar Power, produces electricity and are completely self-sufficient.  Imagine that, a year round garden room that literally costs nothing to operate and extends your passion for healthy, nutritious food to year round roll modeling.

By now, you’ve come to the understanding that I want to build a Conservatory on the White House.  True.  Recently we’ve completed projects in Washington DC at the Bond 45 Restaurant in National Harbor near Gaylord, where the President speaks on occasion.  We’ve also just completed a conservatory on the Old Naval Hospital restoration on Pennsylvania Avenue.

I am a small business owner with years of experience designing and building conservatories.  I have literally travelled the world over learning the craft of conservatory building and gaining understanding of structure design. Like you, I am an avid gardener and enjoy a year round garden that feeds my family along with 14 grandchildren. Our conservatory allows us to garden through the Minnesota winters and get a jump start on spring plantings. Of course, the conservatory is where we celebrate the holidays and find respite from busy days and the dreary winter weather.

I believe you and your garden deserve the year round comfort and joy a conservatory will bring to the White House. The White House deserves to have its complete history restored. And finally, your passion and leadership for local, organic gardening deserves to find a year round home.

I would welcome they chance to provide designs, quotes and time frames for restoring the White House conservatory and will look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

James P. Hewitt

P.S. Hopefully you’ll have a chance to see what we’ve done at the Old Naval Hospital. Of course, more dramatic rooms can be seen on our website at www.conservatorycraftsmen.com

The United States Botanical Garden

Recently, the team of Conservatory Craftsmen were working in Washington DC, at the Old Civil War Naval Hospital. The restored hospital building is 9 blocks from the US Capital, and since it was raining too hard to work, the team decided to do a little sight seeing.

us botanic gardens

We walked to the Capital, and since it was mid summer and the tour lines were very long, we walked across the front lawn of the Capital and into the US Botanical Garden.

Frankly, I think more of the congressmen and women should spend time in the US Botanical garden to take toll of the immense beauty this nation has created.

There are gardens inside and outside the facility, but key to the search is the Conservatory building itself which stands as a beautiful glass model of what a public conservatory should look like.

The visitor can walk up in the mezzanine and look down on the gardens, or walk down into the sunken gardens and immerse ones thoughts in the pools and streams below.

This 1858 photograph shows the Conservatory constructed eight years earlier. The accompanying grounds occupied ten acres extending from First Street to Third Street between Pennsylvania and Maryland Avenues, SW.

The 300-foot-long Main Conservatory, begun in 1867, consisted of a central dome and two wings. This photograph also shows where the Bartholdi Fountain stood from 1877 until 1927.

The Bartholdi fountain, now restored and open to the public was the first lit attraction in Washington DC!

This undated photograph shows the central dome of the Main Conservatory in the late nineteenth or early twentieth century.

Most people go to the iconic attractions of Washington DC, but no trip is complete without going to the US Botanical garden, and who knows, if its a rainy day, you may see the team from Conservatory Craftsmen company hanging out and enjoying the view.

My Real “Dream” Conservatory (Part One)

About 10 years ago, my son Mike and I were dealing with a conservatory fabrication company in England that was creating some custom parts for an old English style conservatory we were designing and building.
As has been the fate of many conservatory companies lately, they shut their doors – right in the in the middle of one of our projects!

So we jumped on a plane and traveled over to the UK to see what we could do about salvaging our materials. Fortunately, we were able to meet with the liquidator at the factory and he showed us to our material, and allowed us to take ownership of it.

While we were there, Mike, my eagle eyed son, noticed a variety of parts scattered around the large fabrication shop. He remembered seeing a photo this company had taken, a few years before, of a conservatory they built for the Chelsea Garden Show (the most prestigious garden show in the world). He also remembered, the conservatory was robin’s egg blue (hard to forget).

Chelsea Garden Show in UK - Robbins Egg Blue Conservatory Chelsea Garden Show in UK - Robbins' Egg Blue Conservatory - Fabrication

He asked the liquidator if the blue “parts” were for sale, which of course they were, so we negotiated a price and shipped it all back to our garage in the good old USA… and there, the story stops. Until the summer of 2010. That’s when a break in our sales action and a chance to secure a home equity loan changed the future of this pile of Robins’ Egg blue painted mahogany, as well as mine.

We decided to break ground and put it on our house. Since my home is a split entry (1/2 up, ½ down) we decided to dig a foundation and put our company office below the conservatory.

We dug the hole, prepared to pour footings, and of course, it rained – 5 inches, which almost filled the hole! But we had a pump and kept it going and got all the water out.

Dream Conservatory My Dream Conservatory My Dream Conservatory My Dream Conservatory: Laid Block

We poured the footings, laid the block, backfilled the foundation and capped it. Now the fun starts! But first, who takes beautiful Sepele mahogany and paints it Robin’s Egg blue? Of course it’s a rhetorical question and no answers mitigates the pain of knowing it all had to be stripped of this micro-porous paint and in order to show the real beauty of the mahogany wood.

So strip we did. Day after day, night after night, weekend after weekend until we had it all stripped down to the gorgeous bare mahogany conservatory beneath it all.

Our great painter, Robb worked with us until we achieved just the right tone of Sikkens to bring out the beauty of the wood. The next step was hanging the material in the new, capped basement to spray.

My Dream Conservatory: Foundation My Dream Conservatory: Foundation Ready My Dream Conservatory: Here Comes the Rain (again) My Dream Conservatory: Somebody know where all these parts go?

Then it rained! The floor or ceiling of the new, capped basement being only plywood, leaked water onto the freshly stripped mahogany wood – which is not good for freshly stripped mahogany. So we set about to restore the wood again!  Working with heat guns and sanders we brought the wood back and prepared it for finishing.  And then of course, it rained again. This sequence repeated itself for 2 weeks.

My Dream Conservatory: Framing My Dream Conservatory: Framing My Dream Conservatory: Puzzle Together My Dream Conservatory: Now that is something!

Finally, re-finished and ready to erect, my great crew worked with me and we built the conservatory. Step by step.
By Christmas we had the tile done on the floor, the room all ‘weathered in’ and we enjoyed Christmas day in the conservatory with all the kiddies and the treats.

The yard, however, was a boulder pile mess, and was going to stay that way until spring.
Here comes the ‘may as well’ part. Anyone who has ever taken on a major renovation on their home understands ‘may as well’. It’s the part, when under total fatigue of building and paying, up comes one more thing that you really should do, now that you have gone this far.

My Dream Conservatory: Now that is something! My Dream Conservatory Today My Dream Conservatory: Landscaping My Dream Conservatory: Waterfall in the Backyard

Mine was the backyard. I am a pretty experienced landscaper and I have always seen the opportunity our yard presents. The small hill in the yard was screaming for a waterfall flowing down upon the new paver patio. So, here we go! Another year of building. This year outside, not in, but still the chaos ensues.
And, as we were busy on the east coast building many fine conservatories throughout the summer, time was limited. With the help of a great friend, Chris, we shared the vision of the yard and went to work. Sounds easy, but many backaches later, we are finally done and enjoying every minute of the new ‘resort’ in the back yard.

The neighbors and kids are too. We designed and built all the spaces for children, so they would have many interesting things to do, and places to play.
Now it’s time to go back inside.  As of this writing, we are beginning to tackle the issues of finishing the inside of the conservatory.

First on the list is building an energy wall. As I explained to one of my customers recently, I don’t mind experimenting on my own conservatory, but I am certainly not going to do it on theirs.
Currently, we are striving to be more energy efficient in all seasons, which means being able heat and cool conservatory and the house by natural means. That’s the next chapter in the story of “my dream conservatory” … which will follow…

East Coast Storm Wreak Havoc On Conservatories

When the walls come tumbling down.

In the aftermath of the massive rain and the storms that have hit the East coast lately, our phone is ringing more than usual. And, unlike many of the companies who have been building conservatories the last 15 years, we are still answering our phone.

Damage to conservatories of lesser quality construction has been severe. Even quality conservatories will suffer if a tree happens to land on them. Thankfully, none of our projects or conservatories have sustained any damage or problems (see the blog about earthquakes).

The biggest problem people are having is that the company that built their conservatory is no longer around. They are simply not in business to service the problem.

Companies like us, that are still thriving, are left to deliver the bad news: “Your conservatory roof cannot be repaired, because the parts are no longer available.”

The main components of conservatory roofs may be damaged and require replacement. If the parts are not available, then your insurance company needs to know that the roof will have to be completely replaced. This can be a significant cost.

If you have damage and are looking for help, send us photos. Tell us as much as you can about when it was constructed and what it was constructed from, and we will do our best to help sort your problem.

The attached photos were of a sunroom in Maryland that could not sustain the snow load. This is typical of a lot of sunrooms built with PVC structures from low end conservatory builders. Sadly, this was built by one of the builders that is no longer answering the phone.
